Looking at Zach Werenski and the Calder Trophy race.

B b b but , Werensky is quarterbacking a power play not to mention playing defence is way more cerebral .

Werenski has had a phenomenal year and will be a Calder nominee, in almost any other year he wins the trophy.

As of right now the trophy belongs to Matthews, hands down.

Why hands down, exactly?

not sure how you are coming to that conclusion so definitively.

Seems like Matthews will struggle to get in the top 3 at this point.

I keep reading Laine, Werenski and Tkachuk should all be top 3.

Oh well.

No love for Ivan Provorov???

Playing top-pair minutes (well) as a 19-year-old on a defensively piss-poor Flyers team. Excels at the fundamentals of the game and rarely makes the wrong decision with or without the puck. If he was given PP minutes instead of Mark Streit, he would likely have double digit goals and around 30 assists (likely).

I still think it's between Laine and Matthews, but put Provorov on Columbus and his numbers are probably on par with Werenski.

It really comes down to how the powers-that-be weigh things. If it's all about glitz and individual stats, it should go to Laine (as of now).
If it's about who the most valuable to his team, I'd put the top 3 down as Mathews, Werenski, and then Marner in that order, with Provarov nipping at their heels.
If it's about the excitement they bring to the game, I'd go with Laine first, and Marner just behind him.
Too bad there isn't a separate trophy for best rookie D, but then again, this is a weird year. Never seen so many first year players deserving of recognition.

Wow... really
It's fine to be a Leaf hater but this comment is beyond logic
Tkachuk?? What stat is he leading?

Pts
P. Laine WPG 60
A. Matthews TOR 58
M. Marner TOR 56
W. Nylander TOR 54

Goals
P. Laine WPG 33
A. Matthews TOR 33

S. Aho CAR 21
W. Nylander TOR 20

Assts
M. Marner TOR 39
Z. Werenski CBJ 36
W. Nylander TOR 34
M. Tkachuk CGY 33

Werenski and Tkachuk are good players and are having good seasons but are no way ahead of Matthews, Marner or arguably even Nylander.

That being said, the Calder will come down to the wire. Matthews is NOT a guarantee.
